The City of Dalton Fire Department has special operations teams trained in technical rescue and hazardous materials response. These teams are adept at mitigating incidents such as trench rescue, structural collapse rescue, vehicle and machinery entrapment, surface water rescue, high and low angle rope operations, confined space rescue, and hazardous materials releases.
Each of the department’s 23 hazardous materials technicians are assigned to the Northwest Georgia Special Operations Team, a state-subsidized regional hazardous materials response unit based in Calhoun, Georgia. This Type 1 hazmat team is adept at handling industrial or transportation related releases, as well as the mitigation of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) incidents.
The department also has 17 members assigned to Georgia Search and Rescue (GSAR) Task Force 6, a state funded urban search and rescue resource used during natural and manmade disasters, rope and confined space rescue incidents, building collapses, and trenching or excavation incidents. Five of these personnel serve as instructors for the task force, while an additional 5 personnel received advanced, specialist level training within these disciplines.
