
Patch Symbolism

The DFD Patch
This patch was created and designed by Captain Scott Millsap. The patch’s layout and design reflects the effort and pride that the men and women of the Dalton Fire Department have in their jobs. Our patch is an ever reminding image of our unique and rewarding job.

Maltese Cross
This is a traditional style Maltese cross, having been the historical symbol of the American fire service for over 200 years. This symbolizes our traditional role as firefighters and the heroic sacrifices by the American firefighters It also pays reverence to all of our fallen comrades who made the supreme sacrifice in their service to mankind. It is located at the top of the emblem, supported by the bugles out of respect for its significance.

Star of Life
The star of life symbolizes the department’s movement into the field of rescue and emergency medical care. This is a movement shared throughout America's fire service. This lead to the realization that our creed "To protect life and property" does not only apply to fire suppression activities but is needed wherever life and property are endangered.

Hazardous Materials NFPA 704
This symbolizes the newest, most important component of the fire service; its recognition as the leader in hazardous materials response.This signals the department's progress from traditional firefighting tactics toward a more educated, prepared, and safer method of response.It also represents the need and establishment of a more educated and equipped firefighter so vital to America's modern fire service.

Flames
These symbolize the historical significance of fire both beneficial and detrimental to man. They symbolize the need for fire prevention and safety education in modern society, that the way to become safe from fire is through education, prevention, and legislation of tougher fire service ordinances.
